Al Maqtaa

This is where centuries of Abu Dhabi's history and heritage are preserved, and every visit feels like a journey through time.

The historic entrance to Abu Dhabi

Al Maqtaa is the original gateway to Abu Dhabi, set near the historic Khor Al Maqta waterway that separates Abu Dhabi Island from the mainland. Established in the late 18th century, the area’s defining symbol is Al Maqtaa Fort (now the Al Maqtaa Museum) featuring a 200-year-old coastal watchtower that once guarded the approach to the city. Today, this iconic centrepiece is surrounded by lifestyle destinations, luxury resorts and famous landmarks.

One of these is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, an architectural wonder of marbled halls and amethyst-and-jasper-embedded columns, and the adjacent Wahat Al Karama memorial complex honouring Emirati heroes. Al Qana Marina is where modern-day Al Maqtaa takes the reins. Fringed with sleek cafés and moored yachts, the marina serves as the entry point to one of Abu Dhabi’s most loved leisure districts.

Visitors can get lost in The National Aquarium – the largest in the Middle East – or have a typical Arabian market experience at The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri, where traditional abras ferry visitors between locations via meandering canals. This area is also where some of Abu Dhabi’s most luxurious beaches await. You might book a day pass for the The Ritz-Carlton private beach, or sip sundowners at Shangri-La Hotel’s Amalfi Beach Lounge.

In the mood for something a little more active? You could head to the high-rope courses and climbing walls of the adrenaline-pumping Adrenark Adventure indoor recreation centre, then explore next-generation VR worlds at Pixoul Gaming. Or take to the water, where calm channels and marinas offer a launchpad for stand-up paddleboarding, wakeboarding, jet skiing and more. Al Maqtaa may have once guarded the city’s edge, but today, it invites you in with some of Abu Dhabi’s most memorable experiences. Come feel the hospitality for yourself.
