Where legacy lives on the water

Dalma Island is one of the UAE’s oldest inhabited places – a quiet, fertile outpost where heritage runs as deep as the surrounding sea. Once a thriving pearl-diving hub, this island 30 kilometres off Abu Dhabi’s coast still holds close ties to its maritime past, with traditional fishing, farming and date cultivation shaping daily life.

The Historic Dalma Race Festival is a major annual attraction, with dhow boat sailing races around the Al Dhafra region's islands. During this weekslong period, the Dalma of the past comes into view, reviving and celebrating the UAE's maritime heritage with Emirati crafts, authentic local cuisine and theatrical performances.

In quieter months, visitors can still step into centuries of history at the Delma Museum, housed in the former residence of renowned pearl merchant Mohammed bin Jasim Al Muraikhi, or explore a trio of beautifully preserved mosques that speak to this important island’s enduring spirit. With archaeological finds dating back over 7,000 years, including Mesopotamian pottery and early farming tools, Dalma quietly tells the story of a civilisation shaped by the sea and still deeply connected to it.
